Reminder: There will Be Significant IT Updates That Could Affect Your Business

Image of ‘UPDATE’ with a human hand holding a red clock.

Microsoft has announced it will end support for Windows 10 in October of 2025. Also, note that Microsoft has limited Windows 11 compatibility with newer hardware – thus, many computers will need to be completely replaced rather than upgraded!

We can help plan device upgrades or replacements and safely migrate your data and applications.

Schedule a consultation with our IT experts today!

Running an unsupported operating system is a security risk and will result in losing compliance with many standards, such as NIST, HIPPA, and PCI. These standards require that you use up-to-date software to protect your data from cyberattacks. If you’re not running Windows 11 or your system is not compatible with Windows 11, you’ll get an annoying pop-up error like the one below, and it won’t go away.

Preparation is critical; the time to start planning and budgeting for this transition is now!

Guarding Your Business: Strategies to Combat Today’s Cybersecurity Threats

Image of a blue cybersecurity shield emblem.

In the digital age, cybersecurity has emerged as a critical concern for businesses of all sizes. Small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs), in particular, often find themselves in the crosshairs of cybercriminals due to perceived vulnerabilities in their security systems. However, with the right strategies and awareness, SMBs can effectively protect themselves from the myriad of cybersecurity threats lurking online. This article explores the critical cybersecurity threats that businesses face today and offers practical advice on safeguarding against them.

The Most Common Cybersecurity Threats

1. Phishing Attacks: One of the most prevalent threats, phishing scams, involves fraudulent attempts to obtain sensitive information by disguising it as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. These attacks often lead to unauthorized access to critical business data.

2. Ransomware: This type of malware blocks access to a computer system until a ransom is paid. For businesses, this can mean significant downtime and loss of critical data.

3. Insider Threats: Sometimes, the threat comes from within, whether intentionally by disgruntled employees or unintentionally through negligent use of IT resources.

4. DDoS Attacks: Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks overwhelm a system’s resources, rendering it inoperable and disrupting business operations.

Practical Tips to Enhance Your Cybersecurity

Implement Strong Password Policies: Encourage the use of complex passwords and the regular updating of passwords across your organization. Consider implementing multi-factor authentication (MFA) for an added layer of security.

Regularly Update and Patch Systems: Ensure that all software and operating systems are updated with the latest security patches. Cybercriminals often exploit vulnerabilities in outdated software to gain unauthorized access to systems.

Educate Your Employees: Human error is one of the leading causes of cybersecurity breaches. Regular training sessions can help employees recognize and avoid common cyber threats, such as phishing and social engineering attacks.

Backup Your Data: Regular backups of critical data can be a lifeline in the event of a cybersecurity incident. Ensure that backups are stored securely and are easily retrievable when necessary.

Invest in Security Software: Utilize reputable antivirus and anti-malware solutions to provide real-time protection against threats. Firewalls should also be used to control incoming and outgoing network traffic based on an applied rule set.

Develop a Response Plan: Having a cybersecurity incident response plan can significantly mitigate the damage of a breach. Ensure that your plan includes steps for containment, eradication, and recovery, as well as communication strategies for internal and external stakeholders.

Seek Professional Computer Help: Perhaps the most crucial advice for SMBs is to seek professional help when it comes to cybersecurity. Partnering with IT security professionals such as CPS can provide access to expert advice, advanced security tools, and ongoing support to protect your business from cyber threats. Our technicians can conduct regular security assessments, implement robust cybersecurity frameworks, respond to incidents, and more.

Cybersecurity is not a one-time effort but an ongoing process that requires vigilance and adaptation to new threats. For SMBs, the challenge of cybersecurity can seem daunting, but by taking proactive steps and seeking professional IT assistance, it’s possible to create a secure digital environment for your business. Protecting your company from cyber threats not only safeguards your data and financial assets but also preserves the trust and confidence of your customers.

The Ultimate Guide to Custom Software for Your Business

Image of a customized inventory management software application.

In an era where technology dictates the pace of business, custom software has emerged as a cornerstone for companies aiming to carve out a competitive edge. Unlike off-the-shelf solutions, custom software is tailor-made to fit the unique requirements of your business, promising not just an improvement in efficiency but also a significant boost in growth. This article reviews how software development can be leveraged to meet specific business needs, streamline operations, and propel your business forward.

Understanding Customized Software

Custom software is designed and developed to cater to the specific demands of a business or an organization. It’s a bespoke solution that perfectly aligns with your operational workflows, customer engagement strategies, and long-term business goals. Unlike generic software solutions that cater to a broad audience with varied needs, custom software is a precise tool crafted to address your unique challenges and objectives.

CPS offers customized software development services for websites, CRMs, business and barcode applications, inventory management systems (or ERPs), general programming changes and updates, and more.

Key Benefits of Custom Software for Your Business

Tailored Solutions

The most significant advantage of custom software is its ability to be perfectly tailored to the needs of your business. It accommodates your business processes rather than forcing you to adjust your workflow to the software, ensuring a seamless integration into your operations.

Scalability and Flexibility

Custom software grows with your business. It’s built to be scalable, accommodating growth and changes in your business strategy. This flexibility allows for modifications and enhancements without a complete overhaul, ensuring longevity and adaptability.

Competitive Advantage

Custom software can provide you with a competitive edge by offering unique features unavailable to your competitors. It supports the creation of innovative ways to serve your customers, differentiate your offerings, and streamline your operations.

Cost-Effectiveness Over Time

While the initial investment in custom software may be higher than purchasing off-the-shelf products, the long-term benefits often outweigh these initial costs. Custom software eliminates the need for multiple software licenses and reduces dependency on disparate systems, leading to maintenance, upgrades, and licensing cost savings.

Enhanced Security

Custom software can be more secure than standard solutions, as it’s less likely to be targeted by hackers due to its unique configuration. Additionally, custom solutions allow for the implementation of specific security measures tailored to your business’s needs and vulnerabilities.

How Custom Software Improves Efficiency and Drives Growth

Streamlining Operations

Bespoke software can automate routine tasks, reduce manual errors, and ensure that resources are allocated efficiently. This streamlining of processes frees up your team to focus on more strategic tasks, directly impacting productivity and operational efficiency.

Data-Driven Decisions

With custom software, businesses can harness the power of data analytics to gain insights into customer behavior, operational bottlenecks, and market trends. These insights enable informed decision-making, helping to drive strategy and growth.

Enhancing Customer Experience

Personalized software allows for the creation of personalized user experiences, fostering loyalty and increasing customer satisfaction. Whether through tailored communication, brand offers, or seamless service delivery, bespoke software can significantly enhance how you engage with your viewers and clientele.

Facilitating Innovation

Custom software provides the flexibility to experiment and innovate, enabling businesses to explore new markets, offer unique services, or improve existing products. This ability to quickly adapt is crucial in maintaining relevance and competitiveness in a rapidly changing market.

Personalized software is an investment in your business’s future. With tailored solutions that grow with your company, custom software improves operational efficiency and provides a solid foundation for sustained growth. Software is not just an acquired tool but a strategic asset that can differentiate your business in the marketplace, enhance customer relationships, and drive it toward its long-term objectives. Whether you’re looking to solve a specific problem, improve efficiency, or seize a new opportunity, customized software systems tailored to your needs can be the catalyst that propels your business to new heights.

Landmark Lawsuit Could Force Google to Divest Ads

A lawsuit filed by the United States Justice Department targets Alphabet’s Google and its monopoly in the advertising space. If the case succeeds, rivals of Google Ads, such as Apple, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon could find an advantage. However, advertisers would have an uncertain future in this scenario.

The Justice Department demanded in the complaint that Google divest its Ad Manager, a suite of tools that allows websites to distribute ads and find customers based on their interests, gender, location, and more.

Apple has been swiftly increasing its emerging advertising sector, endorsing its privacy features, and could be a budding contender if Google Ads loses its stronghold. Since Apple’s data is compiled through phone ownership, its Safari web browser, and the dispersal of applications through its app store, it will have the ability to swiftly diversify its focus into the ad realm.

If the lawsuit filed by the Justice Department succeeds, advertisers and publishers will both experience more leverage with multiple options and an entirely new roster of players. With that comes more competition, as the space will open up to many others.

Google’s advertising competitors are constantly developing new products for publishers (news websites) and advertisers buying those ads. If Google is forced to divest, competitors such as Microsoft’s Xandr will have an edge, as they will continue to work with both sides.

The gains will also come financially for publishers, as they will have more options, inevitably driving down the overall cost in the sector. As more competition emerges, Google Ads will predictably become less effective.

This is not the first time the government has filed lawsuits against dominant companies in an effort to break up monopolies. In 1974, a lawsuit broke up AT&T, which resulted in many advancements and innovations in the telephone industry. In 1998, the Justice Department filed a suit against Microsoft aimed at reining in the company by prohibiting them from extending its dominant operating system to the internet browser. Ironically, the Justice Department and Microsoft settlement paved the way for other internet innovators such as Google.

Russian Hackers Bypass Two-Factor Authentication

Russian-backed hackers pose a huge cyberthreat to America on a daily basis. Now, that threat is especially elevated due to Putin’s unyielding attack, crossing western red lines by invading Ukraine.

“Cyber is a capability that Russian security forces have used in the past and as the decision calculus changes, that may change what’s in play,” former Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency director Chris Krebs said.

Two-factor authentication, also referred to as 2FA, is a vital aspect to secure accounts and data. However, it is not flawless. Russian hackers have successfully beaten the secure system by disguising their access, pretending to be legitimate account holders.

Hackers exploited accounts as early as May 2021 that were linked to an unnamed non-governmental organization. In the breach, hackers accessed sensitive data, according to a report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the United States Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

Victims were mostly those with weak passwords or long-dormant accounts. Once the hackers were able to break into the accounts, they enabled 2FA. After the systems viewed the hackers as legitimate, they ran widespread viruses. One of which was the “PrintNightmare” Windows Print Spooler vulnerability.

Roughly three-quarters of ransomware money ended up in the hands of Russians, according to the BBC.

The Internet Just Got a Speed Boost

Quic is a general-purpose protocol that transmits data between computers, improves speed and security on the Internet, and can replace Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), a standard that has been in place since 1974 when the Internet began. The group that sets criteria for the global network, dubbed the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), recently published Quic as a standard. For years, web browsers and online services have been testing Quic, but the IETF’s new regulation is a sign the industry is mature enough to fully embrace the technology.

Data transmission is a fundamental aspect of the Internet; countless devices, programs, and services are built to use earlier infrastructure, which has lasted for decades. Since Google first announced Quic in 2013, it has been an experimental addition to the Chrome browser and has been in public development.

The Internet needs updates to keep worldwide communication and commerce buzzing, which is why engineers spend time developing transitions such as Quic. This colossal upgrade cuts the wait for web search results by as much as eight percent on computers and four percent on phones. Video buffering dropped to eighteen percent for computer users and fifteen percent on mobile.

Jana Iyengar, an engineer who helped lead Quic standardization at Fastly, said, “The internet transport ecosystem has just been ossified for decades now. Quic is poised to lead the charge on the next generation of internet innovations.”

Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is one of the main protocols of the Internet that oversees how data is sent from one device to another. TCP and Quic work together with Internet Protocol (IP) to function properly. TCP regulates how data is distributed into segments individually addressed, sent across the Internet, then reassembled at the other end. TCP has many jobs, but managing established connections and recovering lost data packets is of utmost importance.

Quic was created to do similar tasks in a more efficient manner. It can quickly set up encrypted connections and handle network changes with ease.

How to Use Microsoft Office for Free

Microsoft Office is usually a necessity for most people, yet the suite isn’t exactly considered budget-friendly. Subscriptions are between $7 a month or $70 annually, and stand-alone versions of the set start at $150. Despite the fee, there are (thankfully) ways to use the software for free.

Without using the professional version that has all of the bells and whistles and latest features, there are plenty of ways to save your wallet.

Use The App: There’s a free online Microsoft app store where you can sign in (or signup) and use the functionality with other apps as well. Follow the on-screen instructions to use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Calendar, and other Office suite apps. A few less-popular apps are available too, such as Sway, an interactive report/presentation app; People, an advanced contact list; and OneDrive, a cloud storage service allowing you to save and access files effortlessly. These apps are limited to basic functionality but are still useful. To use the apps, you will need to be connected to the Internet.

The School Advantage: If you are a student, faculty, or staff member at an educational organization, you are eligible to use Office for free. As long as your school is signed up for the program, you can reap the benefits of using the Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) along with other apps such as Microsoft Teams, Access, and Publisher. If you are a recent graduate, you can obtain the programs at a low cost. The alumni discount program enables post-grads to use Microsoft 365 Personal for only $1 per month for 12 months.

Use that 30-day Trial: For a month, you can use Microsoft Office for free, no strings attached. Up to six users can be added across Windows, Mac, and smartphones. One TB of OneDrive cloud storage is included, which boasts the latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more. When your trial expires, Microsoft will automatically charge you for the full version, as they require your credit card information before you can sign up initially.

Get an Evaluation: For $30, Microsoft’s Evaluation Center program lets you test certain Office apps. This is essentially another free trial, but it provides specific, full-featured software for Office 365 ProPlus. It’s not ideal as a long-term solution, but it is a great temporary option. Since this is a test service used by Microsoft developers, you might encounter a few glitches.

Valid Alternatives: There are plenty of free alternatives that work well and transfer features over to Office seamlessly.

Most Popular Web Browsers as of September

Web browsers play an integral role in supporting many peoples’ daily activities. These programs allow access to the World Wide Web. Websites host different types of information; web browsers retrieve that information from the web server, displaying the content on the device used by the user. Devices include smartphones, desktops, laptops, tablets, etc. Approximately 4.3 billion people used a browser in 2019. The most popular browser is Google Chrome, followed by Apple’s Safari, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and others.

Data shows Google Chrome’s September market share dropped to 66.3 percent, the first time it reached below 70 percent since May. The one-point drop was the first since October 2019 when Chrome decreased by 1.1 points. Apple’s Safari represented 16.73 percent of worldwide users, Mozilla Firefox stayed steady at 4.09 percent. The browser leader, Chrome, has fallen for two straight months, which is uncharacteristic of the behemoth.

Microsoft’s browsers Edge and Explorer both recovered nearly a fifth of previous losses from August, increasing by four-tenths of a percentage point combined. While Internet Explorer stayed steady, Edge increased three-tenths of a point. Microsoft is due to release Windows 10 20H2, which will come with Chromium Edge, and will be an opportunity for a market share bump. Microsoft has a difficult road ahead in its attempt to replace users’ main web browser, Chrome, with Edge. Chrome gained the majority market share after Microsoft abandoned several versions of Internet Explorer during 2016, which enabled Google’s web browser to jump ahead. Without another catastrophic event, it seems unlikely any other browser will compete with Google Chrome’s market share.

At Creative Programs and Systems, we are familiar with all browsers and can service most devices. Have a question or want to learn more about browsers, safety, and market share? Contact CPS or read this article to learn more.
